About twice a month I get together with a crazy group of women to sew and quilt (Elizabeth, Gabrien, Heather, Jen, Kristin, Irene, Mo, Monica, Sally, Shelley, and Violet).
We started out as a "sewing circle" and evolved into the "Sweet Hot Yams" (SHYs or Yams for short).
I'm pretty sure that the story of how we got that name is not as interesting as the name itself, so we'll just let that go for now.
The Yams laugh, tell stories, hatch schemes, swap fabric and tips, and occasionally get a little sewing done. And recently we took a road trip to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.
Heather's trunk, with every available nook and cranny. including the entire backseat, completely filled.
Violet, squeezing Traci's serger into Monica's car at the last minute.

and outside:
I worked on two quilt tops:
And started a new project after a consultation from Elizabeth:
The Portland Modern Quilt Guild display at the quilt show was wonderful:
We also enjoyed the tent displaying work by the various teachers at the quilt show, including Tula Pink and Bari J., who hung out with us one afternoon and evening. It was so great to meet them and I had a blast with them at dinner.

We also enjoyed having dinner one night with Rob Appell (so sweet and generous, and a few Yams were a bit smitten)
and spending a few minutes here and there with Valori Wells. Here is a lovely display of her fabrics in The Stichin' Post.
The Yams are already planning the trip to Sisters for next year.... if we can wait that long!
With wishes, true and kind -- Joan

Looks like too much fun! Your new quilts are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing weekend!! I wish I lived close enough to visit sisters.
ReplyDeleteWow Joan your pictures are incredible! Looks like a fabulous road trip indeed! It's great to have quilty friends to sew and hang out with.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! Thanks for sharing with us. I recognize a couple of your projects, btw!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! When did you take all of those wonderful pictures? I took like four. Total. Thank you so much for documenting the trip so well Joan!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a really fun trip, beautiful weather and quilts on display. Just check out the Rob Appell's link and I can see why a few ladies were smitten. Have never heard of him before...
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous trip away. I love that you were so productive and got those gorgeous tops sewn. Thanks for sharing the quilts, I'd love to own any one of them, sigh.
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to put this post together. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the wonderful quilts and was an incy wincy tiny winy bit jealous that there is no 'Sisters' near me...and if there was, it would no doubt rain on the chosen day!!
ReplyDeleteOoh! Do you happen to know who made the navy quilt you have photographed that has the different sized paler blue squares/rectangles in gradients? I spotted it on flickr a few weeks ago and thought i'd favourited it but it didn't save and I haven't been able to find it again since. Any help would be greatfully appreciated, as i love the quilt.
ReplyDeleteLooks like so much fun...I had friends there and they had a ball. Love your projects too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a blast, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteFUN! Sisters is on my bucket list for sure. Glad you had a great time!
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous that you have so many quilty friends nearby...only problem of living out in the country like I do is less opportunity to meet up with like-minded quilters!!! Looks like y'all had a blast!!
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous! I love the name of your group, and the fact that you have such a nice circle of quilty friends.
ReplyDeleteLucky you, that is definitely a fun road trip.

I went to that show a few years ago even though I'm in CA. I absolutely LOVED it! I wish I could go again! My fam was with me and they weren't as excited as me, and I have no idea why! :)
ReplyDeleteLove your new header and so want to go next year!
