Back to the drawing board...

Or in this case the design wall (and design floor).  First I removed all of the squares from the wall.  That part was painful!  Then I separated the colors into warm and cool groups (going only by the darker triangles).  I'm now thinking of two separate quilts.

This is what I came up with for the warm, dark triangles.  I think I will add a wide white border, narrow warm border, and another white border.  Then bind with a warm color:

Now for the cooler group.  Get ready to vote.  This is Option 1 (very similar to the original layout):

I did originally remove the purple w/white polka dots (as several suggested), but then decided to sneak two back in.

This is Option 2:

And this is the original layout; Option 3.  I realized later that it wasn't just the lighting that is bad in this photo -- I had my camera on the wrong setting.  Oops!  I would like to say that is the first time that has happened to me, but I would never lie to you.

Please feel free to vote for your favorite option.  Just keep in mind that I'm looking at the overall layout idea and not the specifics.  Whichever one I go for will require lots of tweaking.  For example, in option 2 there are a lot of yellows all clustered down the right side of the quilt that would need to be moved.  For right now, I'm hot, sweaty, and tired of climbing on and off the daybed.  Do you think I can call that a workout?  Which overall quilt layout do you like best?

With wishes, true and kind -- Joan

  1. What n amazing difference. Love the warm colours quilt. For the cooler one I actually like both - but I vote option 1. Retains some of your original idea. It will be great whichever you choose.

  3. I really like option 3 - the way the dark and light contrast each other.

  4. I am a bit partial to the original layout...but that my be because I have been wanting to do a quilt in that layout! Ok...let me be more impartial..option 1?!?!?! Option 1 is beautiful, and shows off the cool tones really nicely.

  5. I love the pinwheels :-) but I am looking and thing that maybe you can combine option one and 2 with a border of warm fabric the same width as the little HST in between

  6. These are wonderful, any of them would make me happy*vbs*! I like your original layout #3, with #1 being a very close second. The 'warm' one will be special, too. Nice work! I definitely think you had a workout!

  7. What a dilemma. I do love the original but if it doesn't grab you then for me it is definitely number 1.
Good luck with the completion. Whichever one you choose is going to be brilliant. Go Kaffe!.

  10. I love them all Joan, your original, the warm pinwheels and option 1 & 2. If I had to choose, I would go with option one in the cooler colours. What an amazing workout you have had. I'm loving seeing you process through all of this (that's partly cause I'm not doing any of the hard work!). Can't wait to see what you choose xo

  12. I absolutely LOVE the idea of making the first draft into warm and cool versions. These really come together and work well. Personally, I love the option 1 layout. Isn't it amazing what stepping back from a project can do for you? When in doubt, I love to sleep on it. Great job!

  16. I've made a couple of quilts with option 2. Its a design I like. I would try to make the darker diamonds more scrappy though. I think option 1 is my favourite though.
